Australian of the Year: Grace Tame

Australia has spoken, the amazing Grace Tame has been named Australian of the Year for 2021 and we couldn’t think of anyone more deserving! Want to learn more about Grace’s story? Keep reading…

To put it lightly, Tassie’s own Grace Tame is a survivor and her drive for law reform around sexual assault stemmed from her past. After having been sexually assaulted at the age of 15, she was forced to stay quiet. She bravely spoke out against her abuser a year later when she first reported him to her school, then the police and finally through the courts. When Grace was at the age of 22, she wished to waive her right to anonymity and started to use her voice, in hopes that her story would bring awareness to the issue and help others in a similar position. She soon realised her road to change had only just begun.

At the time, sexual assault survivors were unable to speak out under their own names due to a Tasmania victim gag-law. It was through her involvement in the #letherspeak campaign and a lengthy 2 year battle with the courts that Grace was granted a court order from the Supreme Court of Tasmania, finally allowing her to use her true identity to speak out.

Grace’s story is one that is extremely close to our hearts here at Esther & Co. The importance of speaking up and being heard is a concept often shied away from however as Grace has shown, every voice really does matter. If you’ve been following our journey, you’ll know that we work closely with Be Hers, an organisation dedicated to raise awareness and funds for those trapped in sexual slavery. Our mission is to do everything in our power to give a voice to the voiceless and fight for the freedom of others.

Thanks to the support of our amazing customers, so far we've been able to donate over $250,000. The best part is, we are only getting started! We donate $1 from all orders over $300 to Be Hers to help them in their fight for change.
