bringing back the ’50s fashion

‘50s fashion staples such as roomy skirts, snug sweaters, bobby socks, saddle shoes, and hand-held purses are making a comeback, but designers are adapting the look to make it more modern.

One sign of the trend towards the ‘50s is that some department stores are happily stocking up on items such as pearl necklaces, structured purposes, flat Oxfords shoes, penny loafers, saddle shoes, and button earrings. Voluminous circle skirts and cropped trousers are some of the other items hitting the shelves.

Designers such as Alber Elbaz of Lanvin and Peter Copping of Nina Ricci have chosen to update the retro look for style and functional considerations. For example, Copping said that he drops the waist line closer to the hips rather than incorporating the high waist flare into his designs. The effect is subtle and elegant.

The ‘50s trend isn’t confined to leisure and professional outfits; the trend has spread to lingerie and swimming gear. High-waisted briefs and underwear that resemble girdles are some of the offerings that are available this season.
