The little black dress (or the LBD as it is affectionately referred to), is the ultimate wardrobe staple. Worn to brunch or dinner, work or for cocktails, the LBD caters for every occasion and can be dressed up or down simply through the accessories you choose.

The LBD is a black canvas that at its most decorative can be spectacular, but kept simple can be casual-chic.

It was Coco Chanel who first introduced the little black dress to daytime wearing, with a simple, straight-lined dress released in 1926. Ever since then, the LBD has featured in almost every woman’s wardrobe and has been consistently seen on the red carpet.

So loved is the dress, that the Savannah College of Art and Design has unveiled an exhibition devoted entirely to the dress, celebrating its change over the last century.

Dresses in all sorts of fabrics and cuts are featured, from clinging latex to embroidered leather, but the collection begins with a Chanel dress, which was donated by US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Other famous stars have also lent or donated items, with Rihanna offering a Stella McCartney dress and Lady Gaga sharing her Tom Ford lace gown.
