Weather-proof Your Wardrobe This Season

The weather is starting to drop. Rain or shine (or both some days) is starting to become a reality. With the cold creeping into our day-to-day, so has those difficult decisions on what to wear.  The start of Autumn can be one of the hardest times to style and dress for. Those in-between days where it’s too warm and humid for a tailored coat, or the reverse when it’s too cold for those linen dresses that you loved in summer are now all too familiar.  Enter our essential styling tips on how to layer and to get your wardrobe ready for the new season.

If you haven’t already started to get into timeless neutrals or the new season colour, chocolate, then we have some good news for you.  You can easily update your wardrobe and style with just a few key pieces and some great basics.  Then, let accessories or some chic boots do the rest. Stay warm yet stylish this season with our stylist’s tips.

Before we delve into all-things-layers, we need to touch on the foundations. Great basics will be your best friend here. Our stylist shared that her favourite Autumn/Winter hack is building on some classic basics, then working your way through to your outerwear. Play with different textures and shades of the same or similar colour palette for that effortless, off-duty model look.

Need help getting back to basics? Some key pieces that we consider essentials for this upcoming A/W season include a white shirt (Brooklyn Shirt and Pisces Top), tank tops (Essence Crop Top) and long-sleeves (Britta Top and Amata Top) for layering. Now that we have the basics down, time to turn it up a notch with the top layers.

Knits + Shirts

A combination that we are loving this season is layering a knit over a shirt. Just add any knit over the thinner layer and make sure that you have a pop of that piece showing through. There are a few different ways you can make this look your own and one of them involves a vest. Yes, vests are back. Layer an oversized knitted vest like the Mavis Knit over your go-to white shirt (ours is the Brooklyn Shirt) and not only do you have yourself a timeless look, but it can easily be taken from desk to dinner. Plus, you won’t find yourself getting too hot when you’re indoors. If you’re not a knit person, you can achieve the same effortlessly-chic look by throwing a slouchy knit like the Arianna Jumper.

Cardigans + Basics

Although we love a good knit jumper, cardigans are a great wardrobe staple. Pair a basic tank and cardigan combination like the Essence Crop Top with the Giordana Cardigan for a classic look. The Britta Top and Amata Top can both be used in place of the Essence Tank in efforts to keep you extra warm. Style Tip: You can also wear your cardigan as a top.  Just do a few of the buttons up and leave the ones undone that you’d then tuck into your jeans for a day-time look. To up the ante at night, pair it with a midi or maxi skirt and tuck it in the cardigan at the waist.

Workwear

Is your work wardrobe feeling a bit tired or you feeling cold just thinking about some of your short-sleeved blouses? A coatigan or cardigan is a quick and easy way to elevate your 9 - 5 look with the added perk of some extra warmth. The Renata Cardigan in black and grey are perfect examples of taking your look from corporate to casual, pending how you choose to style your look. Stylist Tip: Our stylist’s choice of outerwear this season is the Zuzu Coatigan and the Fireplace Coatigan (arriving soon - sign up to be the first to know when they arrive) which can take you from 9-5 to 5-9 easily. The length is perfect with a basic tucked into a mini skirt and boots, or with tailored pants or jeans.

Accessories

Finish your look with the perfect accessories. We recommend layering your look further with a touch of luxe. Gold jewellery is trending at the moment so why not complete your outfit with a gorgeous gold chain like the Stormy Necklace and the Small Hoop Earrings from Travel By Travis and your layered look is complete.
