Wedding season in Australia runs almost year-round — and if you have a save-the-date sitting on your fridge right now, you are probably already thinking about what to wear. Garden ceremony in spring? Winery reception in autumn? Coastal wedding in the middle of summer? The good news is that Australian weddings tend to be less prescriptive than their overseas counterparts, which gives you a lot of room to dress beautifully without overthinking it.
Here is everything you need to know about dressing for a wedding as a guest in Australia — from what to wear to what to avoid, and exactly which styles will have you looking effortlessly right.
The golden rules of wedding guest dressing
Before you think about a specific dress, a few principles that never fail.
First: read the invitation. The venue and time of day will tell you almost everything. A 6pm reception at a city restaurant is different from a 3pm garden ceremony at a Hunter Valley winery, which is different again from a beachside ceremony at 11am. Let the setting guide your formality level.
Second: avoid white, ivory and very pale cream. It is a cliché because it is still true. There are hundreds of other beautiful colours — and you want to be remembered for looking wonderful, not for making the bride uncomfortable.
Third: dress for where you will be standing, sitting and dancing. Australian weddings often involve grass, cobblestones, beach sand or farm paths. A stiletto heel and a silk bias cut are beautiful until you are sinking into a lawn. Think practically as well as aesthetically.
Spring and summer weddings
Australian spring and summer weddings call for something light, breathable and a little bit celebratory. Linen dresses, floral maxis and printed midi dresses are all perfect — and the more movement in the fabric, the better, because you will likely be outdoors for at least part of the day.
Our Balayage Dress in Cream Floral is one of our most-purchased wedding guest dresses — a flowing floral maxi with a classic silhouette that photographs beautifully and works from the ceremony through to the reception. The Korbela Dress in Sage and in Powder Pink are also perennial wedding favourites: linen, midi-length, bump-friendly and available in sizes 6 to 20.
For something with a little more drama, the Anvika Dress in Powder Pink is a statement cotton maxi with an off-shoulder sweetheart neckline and a cutout waist detail that is genuinely spectacular at a garden or winery wedding.
Autumn and winter weddings
Winter wedding guest dressing is where women often feel most uncertain — but it is also where you can look truly stunning. A knit midi dress, a satin formal in a rich colour, or a floral dress layered under a structured coat all work beautifully in the cooler months.
Our Marifi Knit Dress in Maroon or Deep Green is a genuinely elegant option for a winter wedding — a V-neck knit midi with long sleeves and a flowing A-line silhouette that reads formal without being stuffy. Pair it with block-heeled boots and a structured clutch and you will look like you spent hours getting ready when it took twenty minutes.
For formal evening weddings in winter, our Bryleigh Dress in Navy or Bordeaux is a satin maxi that strikes exactly the right note — luxurious without being overdressed.
What colours work best
Almost any colour works at an Australian wedding as long as it is not white. The colours we see our community reaching for most for weddings are deep green, sage, dusty pink, navy, champagne, bordeaux and rust. All of these photograph beautifully and work across a range of skin tones.
Bold prints — large florals, botanical prints, colourful stripes — are completely acceptable at Australian weddings and often look stunning in the photos. If you are unsure, a mid-toned solid colour in a beautiful silhouette is always a safe and elegant choice.
