denim a fashion staple

Denim is one of those trends that doesn’t seem to be going out of style. Having been in closets for a number of years, denim is proving to be one of the hottest trends this spring and summer, and is an absolute must in every wardrobe.

Denim is a whole lot more than just the humble jean these days, and celebrities all over the world are dressing down a cocktail dress with a cute denim jacket or making a statement in a studded denim dress.

Here are four ways in which to embrace the denim trend:

The denim jacket

The denim jacket has made a huge comeback this year, pushing aside the reigning champ of the denim shirt for summer cover-up.

A good denim jacket can be worn either day or night. For a casual daytime look, team your jacket with a bold pair of skinnies and statement boots. Finish the look off with an eye-catching gold watch or bracelet.

To add a touch of cocktail sipping glamour to the look, a printed mini and a pair of metallic heels will see you ready to hit the town at night.

Some of the biggest celebrities names seen stepping out in a denim jacket include Miranda Kerr, who looked uber cool in her choice of navy blue skater skirt and buttoned up white blouse.

Former reality star Jamie Chung was festival ready in a feminine floral dress and boots that were given an edge by her stonewash denim jacket.

Cameron Diaz demonstrated perfectly how casual can be cool by teaming a denim jacket, loose fitting top and jeans for a stroll on the street.

The denim dress

Everyone knows that buying the perfect pair of jeans that compliments your buttocks, hips and thighs is a difficult task, so that’s where the denim dress comes in.

There is a denim dress to suit virtually every shape, with styles that can be casual, chic, feminine, edgy or night-time-ready.

A denim dress looks great with enamel jewellery, but can be used with almost any colour. The trick is to keep your look simple, opting for a pair of earrings, bracelet and clutch or cross-body bag.

Tennis shoes look great for a casual day look, as do a strappy pair of sandals. For an edgier look, you can’t go past a pair of ankle boots.

The cutest way to wear a denim dress is to find one that pulls in at the waist or cinch it in yourself with a belt. Cut out style dresses are also very in at the moment.

Denim evening wear

Denim has had a fair few attempts at the evening wear market, but in the past it has not had much success. Remember Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s cringe-worthy attempt at wearing denim on the red carpet for the American music awards?

However, this season denim has had a night time makeover, and is looking fabulous thanks to input from big name designers such as Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.

Designer Roland Mouret believes that what makes denim such a great choice for evening wear is that it is unexpected.

The key to evening wear denim is choosing a darker wash of deep indigo, and dresses should be figure-hugging or structured. A good denim evening dress is all about the cut.

Denim jeans

You would be very hard pressed to find a wardrobe that didn’t house at least one pair of denim jeans, with these pants being the ultimate staple.

Boyfriend jeans are perfect for a relaxing weekend, but should be teamed with a wide elastic belt to ensure the waistline stays high. Boyfriend jeans should always be combined with a tight-fitting top that will balance out the roomy denim cut.

Skinny jeans can make your legs look elongated and can easily be dressed up or down with the right accessories. For extra length you can create a column of colour by blending shades, but a pop of colour can look fabulous too. Long tunics that are belted at the waist show off a slim figure, while thigh-skimming tunics are great for those with curves.

Distressed jeans are excellent for bringing an edge to an outfit, especially when complemented with a sheer, beaded or sequined tank. A military jacket can be worn in cooler temperatures.

Summer is the time to embrace coloured denim.

The versatility of denim to any occasion or season is what makes this fabric such a staple. Choose your favourite styles in denim and deck out your wardrobe with an item that won’t be fading from fashion trends any time soon.
